It's a Small World After All
Monday, December 29, 2014, 05:41 PM
On a recent trip out of state, I was visiting family in Nebraska, Lincoln to be specific. On this trip, we drove from Lincoln Nebraska down to Little Rock Arkansas and back again. It was a good trip. It rained most of the way, which made for a slightly more tiring trip, but the drive home was nice. As usual we saw some very amazing things (more on that later), this particular post however is about a short stop at Taco Bell for food. Somewhere during the drive towards our hotel on one of the nights, we stopped for gas, and decided to grab some Taco Bell before we continued on the trip. While waiting for my food, I saw a gentleman walk past me, and had that strange sensation I'd seen him before (mind you this is some random Taco Bell, in a town I'd never heard of before' so the odds seemed rather long that I'd actually know this person).

As my brain continued to process this encounter I'd realized I had seen him before. As he walked towards the counter, and past me, I stopped him, and asked, "You're in the Air Force right? Sergeant Downing?" As would be expected he gave me a wary look, as one does when you've just been identified by someone you didn't recognize, but he confirmed my suspicions, and I then proceeded to tell him he was me Tech School instructor back in 2007 when I attended tech school in Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls Texas.

Yes, that's right, in some random Taco Bell between Lincoln Nebraska, and Little Rock Arkansas, I run into my Tech School instructor. ::shakes head::

In the process of catching up, I learned that he'd PCS'd to Little Rock AFB, in Little Rock Arkansas and was on the way home from visiting family in Lincoln Nebraska, again, which again kind of blew my mind, as they were basically making the exact opposite of the drive we were.

I soon realized that my family was waiting on me, and all the food they'd gotten "to go" had already been eaten, so I said my good byes, set up to keep in contact, and we got back on the road. Looking back on it, all I can really think is "what are the odds" and "Sometimes, it really does seem like a small, small world"

Dreams Breed Creativity? or Predictability?
Friday, February 21, 2014, 03:57 PM
So I'm horrible at this blog thing. I've been trying to do at least 1 a month, but I keep forgetting about it. I'll think about something I want to write, but then I forget to actually do it.

This month I've decided to write about a dream I've had, sorta, the dream was interesting enough for me to want to expand it into a bit of story, but I'm not sure how far I'll go, for now, I've just kind of made a little story about the dream it's self. I'll see if it gets expanded.

--------------------------------------

The horn blared bringing Jenna out of her daze. She looked at the car, as the horn honked at her again. "Sorry." She mumbled as she moved out of the street and onto the sidewalk. She looked down the street in one direction, looking for something familiar, and then she looked the other way, nothing. She was in a city, a city she didn't recognize. Something about it was off, but she couldn't tell what. Someone bumped into her, and again drew her out of her daze. "Sorry." Said the man, as he placed a hand on her shoulder as she looked like she was about to fall over. "Hey, are you ok?" he asked looking at her, "I don't know you, but you seem pale." Jenna looked at him, his uniform showed he was in the Army, but she didn't recognize his unit patch. It was then she realized she didn't actually know if she was okay. "I... I don't know." She replied. The man looked genuinely concerned for her, "My name is James, are you looking for someone with the 11th?" he asked, she looked at his name tape, It read 'Blackhorse 6' but that didn't make any sense, name tapes should be the last name, it shouldn't be a call sign, or unit name or anything else, just a last name.

Jenna awoke, her alarm blaring in her ear. "yeah yeah." she mumbled as she blindly fumbled for the off switch. She sat up, her hair a mess. She wondered to herself how it was that the people on TV always seemed to wake up with their hair perfect, and ready for the day. She shuffled her way to the kitchen where her best friend, Mr. Coffee had already made her morning brew. She poured the dark liquid into a cup and took a sip. The warm liquid flowed down and seemed to warm her from the inside out. Her phone rang as she took another sip. A glance at the clock told her it was 0615, and a quick check of her memory told her she still had almost 2 hours before she was supposed to be at work. She grabbed the phone off its base and answered it, "Someone better be dead." She said her voice still groggy. "Yeah, Colonel Williams, we've sent a car, they want you on scene, it'll be there in 10." A click signaled the end of the conversation. Jenna grunted as she hung up the phone. She'd been joking, why the hell would they want her of all people at the scene? She quickly got dressed and pulled her hair back into a pony tail, 10 minutes on the dot, a knock on her door told her it was time to go.

The ride was quick, she had her face buried in the file on Colonel Williams, and hadn't been paying attention to where they had been going, but based on the fact she'd only gotten through about 8 pages, it wasn't that far. The car parked just outside the scene and her door was opened for her. She stepped out of the car and looked around for the first time. "Huh." she grunted causing a Lieutenant to her right to glance at her, "First crime scene?" he asked, "No... well, yeah, but I've seen this street before. In fact I dreamt about it last night." The Lieutenant looked her over before shaking his head, "A little deja vu huh?" Jenna nodded, "Yeah, something like that." The Lieutenant motioned her over. She followed him to the body, the Assistant Medical Examiner pulled back the sheet. Jenna turned pale, "Blackhorse 6" she gasped.

Year In Review (sort of)
Tuesday, December 31, 2013, 02:14 PM
Most years, on New Years Eve, my family usually gets together for dinner before all the drunk partying starts, and we discuss the various things that have happened over the last year. Since my nearest family member is 3 hours away, and I have to work early tomorrow. It would seem that most of my New Years traditions aren't going to be followed this year, so I thought I'd share a couple of my fond memories of 2013.

While I know this is my blog, and I could write an entire book if I wanted to here. I'll try to spare the 2 or 3 people who are reading this the pain of reading all that much, so I'm limiting myself to my few favorite moments. Though If you've been reading these, you probably already know at least one of them.

Years ago, my father passed away, leaving me his 34 Dodge pickup, it needed a lot of work, and I was young, and needed transportation. So a family friend traded it for a running vehicle, and the agreement that if/when he was ready to get rid of it, he had to give me first dibs. Well earlier this year, that time came, though it didn't come at the best time, he needed money, so he had to sell it, I couldn't let it go, but I didn't have the money, well, due to the generosity of some of my family, I was able to procure the loan I needed to get the truck back. While it is still currently in need of a radiator, it is back in my possession, and often all I have to do is go look at it, or go sit in it, and I just brings joy back into my heart to know I've got it back.

Another thing that happened this year was that I got another dog. Though my other dogs are back hope (haven't seen them in over a year  ) I decided it was time to get another one, this one is down here with me living in the hotel. She is a black lab and something mix (basically she's a mutt, but she's got the look of a black lab) She's still very young, almost 2 years old, and still acts like a puppy sometimes, but she's another thing that's brought joy to my life, and the lives of everyone around here it seems, the surrounding rooms all have kind of adopted her.

I've always believed that life is what you make out of it, and as such, I'd have to say that overall, this was a good year. That being said, I really hope that next year will be even better.

Time Change Confusion
Sunday, November 3, 2013, 01:37 AM
Random thought moment. I'm sitting here working on this Sunday Morning, November 3, 2013, as most of you are aware, time changes this morning, falls back at 0200. So the first time the clock hits 0200 it goes back to 0100 again. So I'm looking at my desk clock (Changes Automatically) and it's 0134. Then it occurs to me, which 0134? Am I heading to the time change? Or has time already changed? Simple enough, look at my clock that doesn't auto adjust, wait, Desk top auto adjusts, cell phone auto adjusts, laptop auto adjusts, tablet auto adjusts, hell even my watch auto adjusts. I gotta admit... for the 27 years I've been alive, I don't think I've ever ran into this issue before, guess I'll just have to wait till 0200 and see if the clock changes again.

More about my Truck
Wednesday, October 30, 2013, 07:57 PM
After another long laps, here I am again.

In my last blog I mentioned an old 34 Dodge Pick-up, which is now in my possession. It needs a lot of work but it does run. The Radiator has a crack, and therein lies my problem now. The Radiator is the original 1934 Radiator ((further proof they built stuff to last back then)) but the engine is a 1960 Hyper-Pak Slant 6, which requires a pressurized radiator, the original 1934 did not have a pressurized radiator. So a previous owner decided to pressurize the radiator. Worked fine for a while but now the water storage tank on it is bowing really bad, and is started to get cracks all over it, the short version, I need a new Radiator.

Normally this wouldn't be a big issue, a number of places make stock replacement radiators for this truck, but if you've been paying attention, you'll remember that a stock radiator isn't pressurized, and this engine requires a pressurized radiator, so yeah... Now I get to have a custom radiator built, should only cost about $800, so, dead in the water for the moment, but I have the truck, that's the important thing.

As promised, here is the picture.

Oops and other Thoughts
Friday, May 31, 2013, 03:09 PM
So Here I am again, after forgetting to post last month, which is funny because for half the month I had an idea I was going to post about, and just kept putting it off, next thing I know, not only is April over and done with, but I'm looking June square in the face. So here I am again, less than 9 hours till June and trying to scramble to get a blog post in.

In other news ((love saying that...)) Went through a small personal/family emergency this week. My Father used to own an old 1934 Dodge pick-up, given, most of my life it sat in the garage collecting dust. But it was always his truck. About 4 years after he passed, a friend of the family offered me a trade, I was forced to accept, as at the time I needed transportation, and that truck was still thousands of dollars away from being operational again. So we agreed on the trade, with the condition that if he ever sold it, he'd offer it to me first.

Well times came and went that I had the money to get it back, but he wasn't ready to part with it yet. As I'm sure you all know, times are hard right now, the US Economy isn't in the best of shape ((And the understatement of the year award goes tooo...)) so naturally, now that he needs money, and wants to sell it, I have none to offer. So I spent a few hours scrambling, finally managed to come up with it. Now I'm just waiting on the money to arrive. I'll have to post a picture here once I get it.

I had honestly intended to post more, but that's about all that's on my mind for now, so until next time...

Delta Fleet Executive Officer
Thursday, March 14, 2013, 04:33 PM
I've been the Delta Fleet XO for just over a month now, and thought I'd share some thoughts on it.

While it has added more a little work to my plate, I find myself enjoying it. Getting to know the various sims in Delta Fleet is a pleasure, and yes, I said getting to know the sims, each sim has its own personality if you will. A personality created by a combination of the Hosts and Members. Like friends, it takes awhile to get to know the games, but so far, I like what I see.

Remember if you have any questions for me, please feel free to ask!

Watching TV Lately
Thursday, February 14, 2013, 02:06 PM
You know, as I watch more and more TV these days, catching up on shows I used to like, but haven't seen in awhile... it sure seems like TV's gotten darker these days... and I don't mean color wise... most of the shows just seem to have more darker twists to them, more people dying, bad things happening... I guess that's just what it takes to be "interesting" anymore.

Computer Problems SUCK!
Monday, October 29, 2012, 09:22 PM
So as the probably 2 of you that might read this know, I've been working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. It's been loads of fun, So when I'm not working, most of my free time is either consumed by eating or sleeping ((I sound like some critter on some nature show.)) If I'm not doing one of those, I'm usually on my computer. Which not long ago had to have its PSU replaced, that wasn't cool, at least I was able to get the PSU over-nighted, and was only without for 2 days ((put my order in a little too late in the day to get it the next day.))

Now, out of the blue, my computer has decided it's time to lose it's mind. ((Yes, I know, it's probably a virus that my virus protection and mbam haven't detected, or maybe they did detect it, and got rid of it but the damage is done, either way, it sucks)) Basically, every program I own, now has two entries in menus, both work, both load the program, but the programs seem to act independently of each other, my google drive keeps crashing, my drop box won't open at all, and to top it all off, my email program won't update, and my spell checker for Office and Chrome both decided not to work either. So, Now I get the joys of formatting my drive, and starting from scratch.

So, if ya'all don't hear from me for awhile, I probably got fed up, and took a shotgun to my computer.

On a entirely unrelated note, remember to pray for those in the path of the hurricane, I've got both friends and family on the east coast that will be effected by it, let us all keep hoping everything works out ok for them.

Math and Dauntless
Friday, June 29, 2012, 06:46 AM
Almost forgot to do one of these this month.
So I've been trying to help a friend of mine out with a math class that he's working on, he often brings interesting problems to me either to just try and confuse me, or for actual help when he needs it. This time, it was "Triangular Numbers" I'm sure that some of you who read this are like "What's complicated about that? Those are easy!" to those of you who feel that way, I don't want to talk about it. Apparently, from what he's telling me, his kid has been helping him out, cause they teach this in high school now. I remember high school math, and Triangular Numbers was not covered in any of my math classes.

I'd try to show the formula for all this, but to be honest, I don't know how to make my computer show all these things, I know some of them, but I doubt this blog thing could do the same ones I use in word, suffice it to say, I'm going to be sticking with my simple numbers for a while.

On a different note (One I suppose I could use for a separate entry but, ::shrugs:: Oh well)
I've recently started a new guild sim, Star Trek: Dauntless, as far as I know it's the only NX class Enterprise Era game in the FSF for the moment, it's been interesting, I enjoy a game in the that era once in a while, I know that a lot of people don't like that era, or how that series kind of screwed with Trek Canon, but I enjoy it, were going into unused territory, starting with the Earth Romulan War, then continuing on into the Founding of the Federation, then beyond. It's also been one of my first chances to play with a Media Wiki, as I've been trying to consolidate all the information I find on the Enterprise Era into one place, not the easiest of tasks, as I keep getting distracted. It's overall been a real learning experience, and I'm really enjoying it. Please feel free to join us should you so desire!
